Biography

The parentage of John Wells is unknown, [1] as is his birthdate and place.

He had at least one sibling, a brother Thomas, who was the overseer of his will in 1618.

John's wife may have been the "Hellene" Wells [Helen or Ellen] buried at Ringstead on 22 May 1612: [2]

"Hellene Wells wyfe of John Wells buriede this xxij th of May [1612]

John was a yeoman farmer at the time of his death. He owned land which he left in his will in trust to his grandson John Morton.

He was the father of

  • Isabel Wells and grandfather of Richard, John and William Tuttle who emigrated to the colonies on the Planter in 1635. Isabel and her husband Symon Tuttle were mentioned in John Well's 1618 will.[3]
  • a daughter who married a Morton (mentioned in his will)
  • a daughter who married a Barwick / Barwek (a grandson "Custby Barwek" is of age to have borrowed eight pounds in money from his grandfather)

John Wells was buried 18 March 1617/8[4]

The sixteen shillings which Richard Tuttle was to pay the churchwardens each year became part of a charitable institution known as the Ringstead Gift: [6] [7]

"The Ringstead Gift is administered by the incumbents and churchwardens and two other trustees in conformity with the provisions of a Scheme of the Charity Commissioners of 2 August 1864. This charity was formerly called the Charity Estate, but its origin is unknown. The property consists of 27 a. o r. 5 p. of land in Ringstead let to various tenants and producing in 1924 £44 16s. 4d.
The Scheme directed that three-fourths of the net income should be applied to educational purposes and the remaining fourth for the benefit of the deserving poor.
A sum of 16s. a year understood to have been given by a person named Wells is paid out of the Drayton Estate by Mr. William Dodson of Woodford Mill, Ringstead. This is applied as part of the Ringstead Gift."

Children and Grandchildren

The Children and Grandchildren of John Welles of Ringstead, from his will and with supplemental information from the parish registers.

  • Daughter Wells and Euseby Barwick John's will refers to grandson Custby Barwek. This may be a mistranscription of "Euseby", as John Welles did have a grandson named Eusebe (ie Eusebius), baptised in 1591.
    • Robert Barwicke baptised 20 November 1586[8]
    • Etheldred Barwick baptised 28 September 1589[9]
    • Eusebe Barwick baptised 23 June 1591[10]
    • Lewas Barwicke baptised 28 February 1593/4[11]
  • Etheldred: The will of John Welles refers to "Ethedred Morto[n] ye you[n]ger", which suggests Etheldred's mother may have also been named Etheldred. This is confirmed by the 1595 marriage between William Morton and Etheldred Wells. Etheldred Wells married William Morton 13 July 1595, in Ringstead.[12]
    • John Morton baptised 20 May 1596[13]
    • Elizabeth Morton baptised 26 December 1597[14]
    • Etheldred Morton baptised 18 December 1599[15]
    • John Morton baptised 12 November 1609[16] In the bequest to grandson John Morton, it refers to his being under 12 years old: "I will yt his father shall have use of yt till ye said John be twelve yers of age". This is consistent with John Morton's 1609 baptism.
  • Isabel Wells married Simon Tuttle
    • Richard
    • Thomas
    • Simon
    • William Tootell baptised 26 December 1607[17]
    • John was not named in his grandfather Welles' will, but was named in his father's will.

Research Notes

Hellene Wells as the wife of this John Wells.
There is no other John Wells in the parish register, and a wife who predeceased him would fit with John making no mention of his wife in his will. The burial and marriage records were recorded amongst the baptism records for the years 1607 to 1617. The parish clerk at this time used the terminal E liberally on many words.
If this is Hellene is John's wife, it is not known whether she was his only wife or the mother of his children.

Because nothing is known definitely of John's parents or wives, gaps have been filled with incorrect information.

See pages 211 and 213 of Vol 177 (new summer edition of the NEHGR) showing that this John Welles and Thomas Wells (abt.1551-1642) were brothers, and that Hugh Wells (1518-) should be connected as the father of John Welles (1537-bef.1618).

Kay, this article is behind a paywall. We know from John's will that he had a brother Thomas. What is the evidence that this is Thomas Wells of Carlton, Bedfordshire, and that his father was Hugh?

Thanks, Jo

Send me a PM if that doesn't work, and I'll see what I can forward to you to help. It's 28 page long, so not easy to summarize briefly.

Unless someone actually has a source for the wife Jane Antrobus, she should be removed. Objections? The research notes mention three wives and children who simply are not supported by sources and the narrative is not clear on that. It needs to be clarified if no one objects.

I have Joan Antrobus as wife of John Tuttle 1596.

John is the son of Simon Tuttle 1567 & Isabel Wells 1565

Thank you Jo.

Gilly, yes that Joan Antrobus is here and I think it's why there is confusion with this Antrobus.

I've taken a look on behalf of the England Managed Profiles Team. I find no evidence that John's wife was Jane Antrobus. Her name appears to be unknown at this point. I also find no evidence that the currently-attached children John and Elizabeth are his. I think these three people should be detached from this profile. In the course of the research, I checked the will of John Wells, as well as the parish registers for Ringstead. I did find a number of records and additional information that pertains to John's children and grandchildren, which I have added as research notes for the moment.

Hi pms, I am removing John as a child of Thomas Welles and John Bryan, as discussed on the notes below. I am also removing Jennet Lawtie as spouse. There is no sources to suggest that the John Wells who was the father of Isabel Wells is the same John Wells who married Jennet Lawtie.

Hi Profile managers, I am project protecting this profile to protect the LNAB during merge. As per the comment from S below, I will also remove him from his current parents due to lack of sources. Thanks!

Wells-167 and Welles-65 appear to represent the same person because: Reproposing merge, changing direction to Wells going INTO Welles, with the final result being Welles. Please see comments on the two profiles explaining the situation. Please merge to Welles-65.

I suggest we merge all the profiles for John b 1537 into the LNAB Welles, taking his will as guidance. There is unlikely to be a record for his birth, as not many baptisms were recorded at that time. Does that sound ok?
posted by Gillian Thomas
There are currently two pending merges for this profile - one into Wells and one into Welles. Are there any sources that show his last name at birth?

Welles-65 and Welles-105 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicate.

Per the Hale, House... source, page 777, Thomas Welles (shown as father of this profile) did not have a son, John. He only had two children, Ann and Robert. NEHGR 80 (1926), page 300 has the same children; it appears that perhaps John, John and brother Walter are attached to incorrect parents.

This source adds a bit more context to the Hale, House... source, but the dates of the people mentioned in it seem a bit problematic at least so far as Jane/Joan Antrobus and John Wells. Per this source, a Joan Antrobus married first in 1609 to Thomas Lawrence, which makes her birth (~ 1586-90) seemingly too late to be the woman who married John Wells. In 1624-5 she married John Tuttle. Joan Antrobus's mother is named Joan (Arnold), as the Hale, House.. source says, but she didn't marry Joan's father until 1586-7. It says she was 65 in 1635 when they sailed on the Planter (i.e., born ca 1570). So, based on her estimated birth year as well as her mother's imputed birth year, I seriously doubt this Joan/Jane is the one that married John Wells/es. Or, possibly, this source is incorrect as to dates: Antrobus pedigrees : the story of a Cheshire family by Sir Reginald Antrobus Pages 12-13

It is probably a misreading of this source and the Hale House source together, making a mistake that John Wells/es married Jane Antrobus.
